Humboldt State University student Sara Dykman participates in car-free day every day to contribute to helping the environment.
“I’ve never owned a car,” said the 22-year-old Kansas City native. “I’ve never needed to; I love biking and the challenge of it.”

Car Free Day is this Thursday, September 21. It is an annual event celebrated by 100 million people on every continent and supported by the European Union, the United Nations, the Government of Canada and the leaders of 1500 cities around the world. For folks who normally get around by bike, bus or walking, it’s a day to celebrate freedom from the automobile.

Car Free Day events highlight the problems caused by our dependence on the private automobile: air pollution, global warming, stress, and safety issues. It emphasizes the rights of pedestrians and cyclists, the need for more and better public transit, and helps people rediscover their local community outside the confines of their vehicle.
