
Aaron and I recently got back from the Towards Carfree Cities Conference in Portland, Oregon. We gained some new incites both at the conference and on the streets of Portland. "Mexican bus" is a loaded term for many people in the U.S. Chances are, their thoughts immediately run in the direction of a light pink 1960’s-era vehicle overcrowded with children and squawking chickens, broken down somewhere in the desert. But this image could not be more wrong.
Imagine a city of roughly 7 million people with over 180 miles of
bike paths, an efficient rapid bus system, and walk-able sidewalks
lining every street. The first impression that comes to mind may be a
well-heeled European city or you may say to yourself “This doesn’t even
exist!” What surprises many Americans is that this city is found right
here in the western hemisphere. Bogatá, the capital of Colombia,
