The Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCAOG) will soon decide whether the county will focus future development in existing communities or convert more farmland and timberland to suburban sprawl.

Last Saturday a group of volunteers converged at Cooper Gulch Park in Eureka to work on a trail connecting the park with a nearby neighborhood.
A collaborative effort between the Federal Highway Administration, Caltrans and stakeholders including Green Wheels is now complete and should provide some ideas for how to improve bike and pedestrian safety on Broadway, one of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in Humboldt County. Some of the ideas generated from this plan include addition of midblock crossings, sidewalk improvements and addition of bicycle facilities. This study should inform future work Caltrans does on this facility.
On Tuesday evening, Eureka will receive a report from Glen Campora, Senior Policy Advisor for California Department of Housing and Community Development, on the Regional Housing Needs Allocation process under way at HCAOG. The RHNA process took a step backward in December, and is now starting up again with greater opportunity for public input. Eureka is a critical player in the process, since it has the largest jobs-housing imbalance in the county (i.e. lots of jobs and not enough housing). This will take place the night before the first critical HCAOG RHNA committee meeting on Wednesday. The city council meeting starts at 6:30 pm at Eureka City Hall. Here's a link to the agenda.

Caltrans will host an "Open House," Wed., 5-7pm at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka to display drawings of new proposed "modified alternatives" for the 101 Eureka Arcata Corridor Improvement Project and invite public comment. We're not sure if there will be a hearing, or just comment cards.

In Eureka, civic pride and public transit go way back
Results from Humboldt County and California are mostly in. Of course there is a lot of excitement about the election of our first African American President, but let's take a look at some transportation ballot measures and how they faired:
The Humboldt Transit Authority (HTA) Board discussed a proposed College of the Redwoods bus-fare discount program and the limited success in opening Tuesday’s Quail service to the general public at their Board meeting this morning in the HTA conference room.

Caltrans made a presentation available on its website which illustrates two new alternatives on the 101 Eureka Arcata Corridor Project, which is a project to close all at-grade median crossings on the corridor to eliminate left-turn movements. The new alternatives, 1A and 3A are variations on Alternatives 1 and 3 in the original draft EIR.
