Memorial Ride sparks discussions of what to do next

About forty folks showed up for the memorial ride today from Arcata to Blue Lake. The ride was in memory of Greg Jennings, who was killed on the stretch of 299 between Glendale and Blue lake about two weeks ago.

Rick Knapp of the Humboldt Bay Bicycle Commuters Association handed out black arm bands for riders, and briefed the group on safety of riding on the freeway as a group.

Tim Daniels of Team Bigfoot, talked a little about our sense of purpose. "We are not going away," he said.

At the site of the collision, there were two wreaths on a fence, and a skid mark where the motorist appears to have driven his right wheels onto the grass to the right of the shoulder. That would explain how he managed to hit Greg with the front left side of his pick-up truck.

There were some good discussions at the crash site and at the Blue Lake terminus of the ride about some of what we would like to accomplish. There will be questions to the DA and CHP investigators as to whether they will act to protect public safety by stepping up to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law when violators kill or injure other road users through clear negligence. Pushing for safety improvements on our roadways, better driver education, and development of alternatives such as the Annie and Mary and the Eureka - Arcata Humboldt Bay Trail is sure to follow.

The bicycling community is motivated and mobilized by this incident. We want to create positive change out of this terrible tragedy.

Crash site?

Can anyone give me a more detailed description of where the crash took place? I'm trying to get an idea of the exact conditions there.

The collision site is on the

The collision site is on the straight stretch leading up to the Blue Lake exit.  On the right there is a section of fence with no vegetation covering it, and two wreaths.
