Arcata has won recognition as a “Bicycle Friendly City” from the League of American Bicyclists. The League’s Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign is an awards program that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling. A Bicycle-Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation and recreation. Arcata joins eight other California cities with the bronze rating. Ratings go up from there to Silver, Gold and most recently Platinum which only Portland, Oregon and Davis, California have achieved.
City Councilmember Harmony Groves and Green Wheels E.D. Chris Rall completed the application with assistance from Public Works Director, Doby Class and other city employees.
The bronze Bicycle Friendly Cities designation will help Arcata identify its strengths and weaknesses to work toward a higher designation. Watch out Portland! We’ll be gunning for you soon!
