Eureka City Councilmembers Chris Kerrigan, Jeff Leonard and Larry Glass had some very encouraging comments tonight on the Traffic Signal synchronization project which the city is pursuing in cooperation with Caltrans. The project installs compatible electronis in both Caltrans' and the City's traffic signals to improve the flow of car traffic.
At the meeting I provided comments about signal prioritization for buses as a possible outcome of these improvements. This is technology that makes the light turn green for buses as they approach an intersection speeding bus service for the riders.
Larry Glass expressed concern about protecting the investment in the computers installed at each traffic signal from traffic collisions. Chris Kerrigan talked about his support of signal prioritization and his hope that motorists slow down more to make Eureka safer.
Jeff Leonard (above) summed it up, by encouraging staff in their collaboration with Caltrans on the project that the council expressed interest in controling speed and eventually signal prioritization.
It's great to see the council giving staff some direction that is consistent with the first transportation goal in their vision statement of making Eureka a pedestrian friendly environment.
