Car-Free Day 2006 Events

International Car Free Day is an annual event celebrated by 100 million people on every continent and supported by the European Union, the United Nations, the Government of Canada and the leaders of 1500 cities around the world.  Car Free Day events highlight the problems caused by our dependence on the private automobile:  air pollution, global warming, stress, and safety issues. It emphasizes the rights of pedestrians and cyclists, the need for more and better public transit, and helps people rediscover their local community, outside the confines of their vehicle.

Here on the HSU campus you can participate by riding in the Tour d'Arcata, a massive community bike ride, followed by a community-sponsored breakfast.  All day B-Street will be closed off to cars and transformed into a walkable mural; come check out the art or help make it.  You can enter fun contests like heaviest bike or greenest bike, race the best in grueling fix-a-flat contests, or learn how to fix a flat for the first time. If you are feeling really good try the bike log pull up "B" street.
